Reality Check: Sometimes Things Don’t Work

When we work online we get used to things working a certain way, and usually they work instantly. In reality though, not everything works as quickly or as well as we expect them to.

Email for example, can sometimes get lost along the way. Other times it can simply be delayed. And I was reminded this morning that sometimes it simply refuses to cooperate no matter what you try to do.

I woke up this morning to find a new customer had not been sent to the product download page automatically from PayPal. This does happen once in awhile unfortunately, but it’s usually not a huge problem. I normally just send a link to the download page to them in email and the problem is solved.

Today however, I’ve tried every which way I can think of to get email to this new customer, and they all keep bouncing back :( I finally resorted to sending him a $1 payment via PayPal, with a note attached. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this worked.

My point is this: As frustrating as errors or problems can be, we need to remember that the Internet is not perfect. Sometimes email gets lost or delayed. Sometimes web pages give us an error or refuse to load. Sometimes a form submission cuts off half the data included. Sometimes files get corrupted. Etc.

The list of possible problems when doing business online is actually quite large, but until you’ve been doing business online for some time you might not realize that random - seemingly out of the blue - glitches can occur.

The best we can do is put backup plans and alternatives into place, then roll with it when nothing seems to be working right.

Or just go back to bed and try again later ;)
