Licensing Crossroads: PLR, Resell, Other
Hi All,
I posted this at the Warrior Forum this morning and am cross posting it here too because I’d really like some more feedback…
Ok, I have a problem and would love some feedback from lots of people…
I’ve been working on a small ebook recently, which has a working title of “Digital Photography Basics” and will be about 35-40 pages in size. It’s primarily for beginner and amateur photographers, and in the beginning I’d planned on creating this to sell PLR rights to.
As I dug into the project though, I couldn’t help myself. I had to make something of really high quality: Enough that if I were the target market I’d be thrilled with it. And one of the most important features to people at any level of the photography market is to be able to see actual photographic examples of a technique or problem.
So I started adding example pictures with annotations and additional explanations of the various concepts. I put in pictures showing what good composition is for instance, and showing what digital noise is.
And therein lies my conundrum. I’m now starting to wonder which approach to selling this I should take. My current thoughts are these:
1. Sell direct, and make it available for affiliates to promote through PDC - This allows me to establish a potentially ongoing income stream, and I could grow a list of possible buyers for additional related products.
2. Sell resell rights to the product to other marketers - This would allow me to make money from the product, without having to fool with customer support, lists, marketing, “tapping” the consumer niche and so on but I’d still have my name and expertise attached for future related product sales.
3. Sell PLR rights to the product to other marketers - This is the easiest for me because the only mailing list I maintain consists of actual buyers. And most of these buyers are interested in PLR products.
The problem with PLR of course though, is that it’s much more limited in market size than people interested in learning how to take better pictures. And by selling PLR, I’m allowing all traces of myself to be removed from the product, so the only potential future sales would be from additional PLR products.
Then there’s the issue of my photos. By selling PLR rights to the product - IF I include the photos as part of the source files, I’m releasing a lot of control over those pictures. And since some of them have people in them, there’s a larger potential for abuse in the long run.
Now if I were operating in true “guru” form, I’d be all about setting myself up to dominate the photography niche. This doesn’t really appeal to me though, because I have such a huge variety of eclectic interests and knowledge.
If I tried to dominate every niche I have a lot of knowledge about, I’d have a very long and very work intensive life.
I do have a couple of photography related websites I could promote the product on. One I haven’t touched in close to a year and it gets roughly 20-30 visits a day, and the other I only add to semi-regularly and it gets ~120 a day. So I could theoretically get a trickle of direct sales through those sites without much effort.
I have a habit of just putting up products and forgetting about them though. I don’t try to promote them much and I don’t like building or maintaining mailing lists. So it’s not likely to reach much of it’s potential if I don’t at least get some affiliate promotions going for it.
I’ve half thought about doing all three of the above too.
- Direct consumer sales for about $15-$20
- Resell rights for $30-$40
- PLR rights for $50+
So what do all of you think? And which rights or approach do you prefer to work with on products like this: Affiliate income, resell rights, or private label?
Other thoughts and comments?
Thanks in advance,
Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Here is my 2.2c worth (got to pay GST down here!)
Given the private nature of the photos and screenshots, I would ditch the idea of selling the PLR rights and simply stick with selling Master Resell Rights — that way you retain control of the photos, etc. I would also be looking at some sort of affiliate deal, and maybe packaging a couple of your other photography-related products as a bonus.
Since you are a member of the Warrior Forum, you could try setting up a WSO and see if you could get some of the big(ish) dogs there to sell a few copies for you.
Bye for now,
Terry

Hi Terry,
Thanks so much for the feedback
I actually did put up a brief WSO and it didn’t do overly well, but at least it made a small profit.
In the end I decided to go with Resell Rights because the photos are too important to me, and the product is incomplete without them.
I think in general I’m working towards getting away from selling PLR for books and reports. The ROI on them just isn’t worth giving away the farm
Thanks for letting me know about the bad links in my reports area too, I’ve gotten that fixed now!
